[FULLY BOOKED] An introduction to Mountain Biking (Free Training)

Please note: This course is free and you do not need to be a member of the mbswindon MTB club in order to participate, however places are limited to six riders per course date and must be reserved in advance.

Whilst it might lack actual mountains, our local area still provides some great places to explore on a mountain bike. This free introduction to mountain biking training session,  provided by the mbswindon MTB club in conjunction with the CTC Swindon Cycling Champions project (funded by the Big Lottery), will teach you how to discover, ride and enjoy off-road routes that’ll take you through some stunning countryside.

Whether you’re a total novice who yearns to explore, someone who has owned a mountain bike for years and now wants to get more out of it or you want to learn how to take the kids on an adventure safely, this course is for you.

Led by a qualified mountain bike instructor, all the basic skills required to maximise your enjoyment of local tracks and trails on a mountain bike are covered, including:

  • Pre-ride bike safety checks
  • Use of gears
  • Descents
  • Ascents
  • Front wheel lifts
  • Rights of way – where you can and cannot cycle off-road, and courtesy to others
  • What equipment to carry on the trail
  • Basic maintenance & repairs (cleaning, lubrication, fixing broken chain, repairing a puncture)
  • Q&A and Advice

Open to all aged 16 or over, the course will start/end at Barbury Castle and last around 4 hours (10am – 2pm). All you need is a well-maintained mountain bike, a helmet and a few basics. No previous skills (other than being able to ride a bike!) are needed and no-one will get left behind. Everything else, including specialist equipment, is provided by the instructor.

  1. Sorry, I missed that bit out! I’ve now updated the text.

These particular events are open to anyone aged 16 or over. However, I know a number of other events are being planned which should cater for younger family members.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch via the form link above if you need more information or wish to reserve a place.
