Whether you’re a total novice wanting to get into mountain biking or you’re a regular that’s never had any proper training, this course is an ideal starting point to becoming a better rider.
Led by a qualified mountain bike instructor, all the basic skills required to maximise your enjoyment of local tracks and trails on a mountain bike are covered, including:
- Pre-ride bike safety checks
- Basic riding position
- Use of brakes
- Use of gears
- Small drops (rolling)
- Front wheel lifts
- What equipment to carry on the trail
- Time/weather/interest permitting – Advice on basic maintenance & repairs (e.g. fixing broken chain, repairing a puncture)
- Q&A and Advice
Open to all aged 18 or over (unless accompanied, please contact us if you wish to bring an under 18), the course will start/end at Barbury Castle and last around 5-6 hours (10am – 3/4pm). All you need is a well-maintained mountain bike, a helmet and a few basics. No previous skills (other than being able to ride a bike!) are needed and no-one will get left behind.
The 2018 training season has come to a close. Dates for 2019 will be announced in the Spring.

Booking a course
Courses are £20 for MB Swindon club members, £25 for non-members. Booking functionality will be available when course dates are announced.
You can cancel up to and including a week before your course. The cost of your course will be refunded or you can transfer onto another training course. If you have to cancel in the week leading up to your course then we will not be able to refund the cost of your course or transfer you to another course. However, your place on the course can be transferred to a different person. MBSwindon reserve the right to cancel a course if less than 4 people are booked on it. If this happens the cost of your course will be refunded or you can transfer onto another training course.
