We will follow the cycle route out of Coate to Chiseldon where we ride along the old railway line to Ogbourne St George. Leaving the railway line we make the non-technical climb up a bridleway to the Ridgeway. Then, crossing straight over the Ridgeway path, we make the non-technical descent down Red Lane followed by a short climb up the bridleway to join the road. We follow the road for a couple of miles before we join a bridleway and go up and over the downs, finally making the descent to Aldbourne for refreshments.
After our break, we make the long, non-technical climb out of Aldbourne. Joining the Baydon road we descend towards Fox Hill crossroads and return to Coate Water – mostly downhill – along country lanes.
Although this is a non-technical route (which avoids all the really muddy bits), riding the distance of 24 miles with 1600ft of climbing does require a reasonable level of fitness.
Meet by the diving platform in Coate Water at 9.45, ready for a 10.00 o’clock start. Bring the usual accessories such as water, spare tubes and/or puncture repair kit.
